About
My research centers on map-based visualizations of document collections and the ways these visualizations can support higher-order cognitive activities such as decision making, sensemaking, collection understanding, visual analytics, knowledge discovery, serendipitous discoveries, to name a few. The motivation for my research comes from the cognitive psychology premise that interactions with information representations can stimulate higher-level cognitive activities by helping users generate hypotheses, draw conclusions, and identify trends and patterns. However, some studies in human-computer interaction research suggest that not every computer interaction can facilitate understanding and instead may sometimes hinder the completion of activities. Therefore, I focus on human information interactions for which there is empirical evidence that they can facilitate reasoning and understanding. My research demonstrates that such interactions have a potential to transform map-based visualizations into useful sensemaking tools that can offer users unique means for discovering new patterns and interrelations among documents in collections.
